Guwahati, Oct 14: The NDA ally and partner in the Assam government, regional party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Monday celebrated its 40th foundation day by organising a central programme at Jeraigaon under Chabua subdivision in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

The foundation day programme was attended by AGP leaders, members and workers of the party from across the state. During the programme, the party leaders paid tributes to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.

Taking to social media later, AGP president Atul Bora said that the philosophy of progressive regionalism of the Asom Gana Parishad has significantly fostered the trust of the people.

“Behind the founding of the AGP lies a history marked by countless struggles and sacrifices. Since its establishment in 1985, the party has grown and today celebrates its 40th anniversary. I had the honour of participating in the central programme held in Jeraigaon, Chabua, Dibrugarh district, which included tributes to martyrs and the remembrance of esteemed colleagues. I expressed my heartfelt homage to all,” Bora stated.

“On this significant day, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening regionalism in Assam. With pride in the hearts of the Assamese people, we resolve to work unitedly for the welfare of Assam and its people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also extended his greetings to the AGP leaders and workers on the occasion.

“AGP traces its origins to fulfilling the aspirations of our people and has always been at the forefront of serving society. Our alliance has withstood the test of times and is bound by common values, principles and a shared vision for a prosperous and stronger Assam,” the chief minister said.

Pro-talks ULFA leader

Pro-talks ULFA leader Anup Chetia alias Golap Baruah on Monday resolved to support regionalism, while assuring full-fledged support to a regional party like the Asom Gana Parishad.

Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the AGP’s central programme to mark its 40th foundation day at Jeraigaon, Chetia however turned down speculations about plans to join the AGP, or for that matter any other political party, as of now.

On the other hand, he appealed to other regional parties such as the AJP and Raijor Dal to come together on a common platform with the AGP to discuss and work for safeguarding the rights of indigenous people of the state.

Chetia also said that he would stay away from active politics till the agreement inked between the Centre and the pro-talks ULFA was made operational and the clauses of the pact implemented by the government.

He further appealed to the central government and the state government to take initiatives to implement the agreement with the pro-talks ULFA.
