SHILLONG, Oct 13: The Opposition Congress has asked the state government to adopt modern technology like Artificial Intelligence to beat the burgeoning traffic congestion in the city, asserting that modern day problems require modern solutions instead of age-old and failed tactics.
“The government has installed high-tech cameras all over the city and by now they must have captured a lot of videos. The government could feed these videos to any system using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and run some sort of simulations to find out the exact bottleneck that leads to traffic woes,” Congress leader and MPCC secretary, Manuel Badwar said on Sunday.
“If they would have done that by now, they would have sufficient data to pinpoint the problematic areas and also find out ways and means to tackle it,” he said.
Acknowledging that roads and flyovers cannot be build overnight, Badwar said the first step towards efficient traffic management would be for the government to pinpoint the difficult zones or zones which are really detrimental for traffic management and find a solution in those areas on priority.
“My only submission to the government is that they should use the hi-tech cameras to examine the hurdles and use AI enabled simulations to find out how the Traffic department can efficiently man those places,” he added.
Pointing out that traffic congestion is mainly caused due to bottlenecks, he said, “By doing a proper study the government will be able to come up with a better solution rather than pushing the traffic personnel who are already overworked.”
“I don’t know why they are taking so long since everybody is coming out with a white paper and everybody has an opinion on the traffic issue. There are technologies available with the government and it should use them,” he added.
