NONGPOH, Oct 18: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), North Khasi Hills District unit, through its Employment & Monitoring Cell, on Friday called on the Member Secretary of the District Selection Committee (DSC), Raja Brahma, advocating transparency and fairness in public employment.
The meeting was aimed at addressing growing concerns about the recruitment process under the DSC, which many candidates have criticised for being opaque and susceptible to favoritism.
Addressing media persons following the meeting, Banjop Maring, Chairman of the KSU’s Employment & Monitoring Cell, informed that the discussions centered on ensuring a more credible and impartial recruitment process.
Stresssing the need to restore public trust by removing doubts and fears of biased treatment among candidates, Maring said the KSU, during the meeting, submitted a memorandum with 15 recommendations aimed at reforming recruitment practices.
Key suggestions included the appointment of a Vice Chairman and DSC members without political affiliations, the annual disclosure of the committee’s composition, and prioritising permanent residents of Meghalaya for recruitment.
The KSU also urged against appointing candidates on contractual, ad-hoc, or casual terms.
The memorandum also emphasised the importance of conducting recruitment exams annually without delays and called for greater transparency by publishing candidate marks and results.
To enhance accountability, the KSU proposed giving candidates carbon copies of their OMR sheets. Additionally, the union recommended completing the recruitment process within six months of the exam and eliminating personal interviews for posts in Categories B, C and D.
They also suggested introducing computer-based exams to modernise the process, prevent question paper leaks, and ensure that competent candidates are selected.
The KSU further urged the DSC to submit an annual performance report to ensure recruitment efficiency and fairness.
According to the union, the proposed reforms aim to create a transparent and reliable recruitment system, providing deserving candidates with a fair opportunity to secure government jobs.
