SHILLONG, Oct 22: Hima Nongkhlaw, one of the oldest Khasi Himas, will celebrate its Quincentenary Jubilee on December 6, a date that also coincides with the death anniversary of the freedom fighter Phan Nonglait.
The celebrations will culminate on January 4, a day marked as Khasi Awakening Day, commemorating when the Khasi States stood against British rule.
A special committee has been formed to oversee the celebration, with the Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw, PM Syiemlieh, appointed as chairman. Deputy Syiem KM Syiemlieh will serve as secretary, alongside the Myntris and a few Sordars as committee members.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw explained that in 1524, the Hima consisted of 14 Himas and 8 Lyngdohs, which is why it is also referred to as Hima Khatsaw Phra.
According to him, the first Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw was Shajer Syiem, who ruled from 1524 to 1554.
He further noted that the Hima Nongkhlaw has had 20 Syiems and five Acting Syiems throughout its history.
Syiemlieh highlighted that Hima Nongkhlaw reached its peak during the reign of Khasi freedom fighter Tirot Sing Syiem, who ruled from 1814 to 1834.
Tirot Sing led the resistance against the British when they began constructing a road from Kamrup to Sylhet via Nongkhlaw.
The war between the Khasis and the British lasted four years until Tirot Sing Syiem was captured and imprisoned in Dhaka, where he remained until his death on July 17, 1835.
As part of the jubilee celebration, the Hima will host a variety of events, including a football tournament divided into eight zones, as well as basketball, marathon, fishing, and cycling competitions.
Additionally, debate, quiz, and skit competitions centered on the life of U Tirot Sing Syiem will be organised.
Moreover, a documentary film on Hima Nongkhlaw will be released, commemorating its 500 years of existence. The anthem song of the Hima will also be unveiled during the celebration.
