M’laya athletes set to compete in national c’ship

Shillong, Oct 22: Under the aegis of the Meghalaya Athletics Association, a team of four young athletes from Meghalaya will participate in the 39th National Junior Athletics Championship 2024, set to be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from October 25 to 29.
The team, accompanied by their coach and manager, departed on Tuesday afternoon.The athletes representing Meghalaya include: Rikangku D Sangma (U-14, Boys) – Events: Kids Javelin, Triathlon B, Rukini RT Dkhar (U-16, Girls) – Event: 600M, Anrisha Klein (U-20, Women) – Event: High Jump, Donbok Shabong (U-20, Men) – Event: 400M
The team is coached by Pleasantly Synnah, an athletic coach from the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs.This participation follows the athletes’ strong performances at the recently concluded 35th East Zone Junior National Athletics Championship 2024. Rikangku D Sangma won a silver medal in the Kids Javelin and secured a 4th place finish in Triathlon B, raising hopes for a strong showing in the upcoming national competition.
“We expect him to surprise everyone with a good performance at the Nationals,” a team representative said.Other athletes also had notable achievements in the East Zone Championship: Anrisha Klein secured a silver medal in the High Jump, Donbok Shabong claimed gold in the 4x400M mixed relay, Rukini RT Dkhar finished 4th in her event.
With these results, expectations are high for the Meghalaya contingent to deliver top performances at the 39th National Junior Athletics Championship. Only athletes who have broken the entry standards set by the Athletics Federation of India are eligible to participate in the prestigious event, further underscoring the caliber of Meghalaya’s young athletes.The championship will feature the best junior athletes from across the country, and the Meghalaya team is confident of making a mark on the national stage.
With their past successes and determined preparation, the Meghalaya team is poised to showcase their talents on a national level. As the athletes head to Bhubaneswar, expectations are high for them to not only compete but also bring home accolades for the state.
