Breast cancer survivors recall journeys at city programme

SHILLONG, Oct 26: In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, A Mama’s Café, founded by Eva Kurbah, hosted an awareness programme in collaboration with the State Cancer Health Society, with breast cancer survivors recalling their journeys.
The event drew healthcare professionals and other dignitaries, including East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Rosetta Mary Kurbah.
Dr. Anisha Mawlong, Head of the Oncology Department at Civil Hospital, praised Eva Kurbah’s initiative, emphasising the value of community-led efforts in raising health awareness.
“It’s heartening to see initiatives from within the community, without always relying on government support,” Dr. Mawlong remarked.
The awareness programme featured powerful testimonies from breast cancer survivors, who underscored the life-saving importance of early detection.
The speakers also emphasised the roles of self-examination and regular check-ups in improving outcomes for breast cancer patients.
The event also explored the possibility for a public-private hospital partnership to ease the strain on government hospitals, which face staff shortages in cancer-screening services.
