TURA, Oct 26: Allegations of extortion have surfaced against alleged self-styled pressure groups in South Garo Hills after a woman filed a complaint with the police.
The complaint was filed on Friday at Nongalbibra Police Station by one Dexsit M Sangma, who alleged that unknown miscreants, posing as members of local pressure groups, had extorted money from her goods vehicle at multiple locations in the district on several occasions.
According to the FIR, the victim’s vehicle (AS25P C4822) was transporting goods from Guwahati to Mahadeo on October 23 when unknown miscreants, claiming to represent local pressure groups, demanded Rs 6,000 from the driver at Panda Reserve in Baghmara.  A similar incident reportedly occurred at Simsang Bridge, where Rs 15,000 was demanded on October 14 and 19 by other purported groups.
“We face extortion twice a week while passing through the National Highway from Dainadubi to Moheskola areas, which is affecting our businesses as well as farmers,” Sangma stated in the FIR.
Pointing out that such incidents were occurring despite the vehicles having legal licenses and paying GST, she urged the Police department to take stern action against those involved in the extortion activities.
