SHILLONG, Oct 26: The state government has approved the installation of 100 public convenience facilities across Meghalaya, particularly in popular tourist areas.
For years, inadequate infrastructure and basic amenities have hindered Meghalaya’s tourism potential, despite efforts to attract more visitors. Although delayed, the state tourism department is now tackling this issue with a grassroots approach.
“We have successfully marketed Shillong as a destination brand, and we have now sanctioned about 100 public convenience facilities across Meghalaya,” said Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh. “These facilities will include toilets and drinking water stations, which will be installed initially in the first phase at our top 100 destinations.”
Poor road conditions, unhygienic toilets, lack of signage, and unregulated tourist inflow remain common issues at many tourist sites. Although steps have been taken, much more needs to be done, and this initiative by the state government appears to be a positive step forward.
Very recently, ‘Travel Trends Report’ by global travel app Skyscanner had revealed that Shillong had pipped Azerbaijan’s historic capital city Baku as the most popular destination for Indian travellers in 2025.
Shillong is the only Indian city to feature in the list as part of the annual report.
The report, which offers insights into the pulse of Indian travellers in the coming year, claimed that 66 per cent of Indians plan to “travel more” in the coming year.
