SHILLONG, Oct 28: The state government has decided to upgrade 2,000 anganwadi centres into early childhood development (ECD) centres, equipped with innovative learning tools for children and lactating mothers, under the Early Childhood Development Mission.
These centres will support children, pregnant women and lactating mothers with resources to improve child nutrition.
A marathon meeting was held between the state government and various partners as well as departments to discuss the initiative’s future steps.
The government is partnering with IIT Bombay to provide breastfeeding training in order to address issues like stunting.
The centres, to be constructed with the help of the C&RD Department, will also feature improved learning environments.
Health Department Principal Secretary Sampath Kumar informed that 2,000 anganwadi centres will be upgraded within two years.
It was also informed that 40 trainers have already been trained under the Early Childhood Development Programme.
