SHILLONG, Oct 31: National Unity Day was celebrated across the state capital on Thursday to honour the 148th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, commemorating his efforts in uniting over 500 princely states into India after independence.
The observance included various events organised by government institutions, universities and banks to foster national unity, integration, and pride.
At the Main Secretariat building, Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang led a pledge ceremony, reinforcing the commitment to unity among citizens.
On the other hand, the Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in Shillong organised a Unity Walk to promote inclusivity and unity.
The walk, which began at the CRCSRE office in Dhankheti and proceeded to Malki Point, included 55 participants, including visually impaired beneficiaries, students, teachers and staff.
Director Dr. Ram Shakal Sahani praised the participants for embodying Patel’s vision of a united society.
Similarly, North East Adventist University (NEAU) hosted a grand celebration organised by the Department of Political Science, which brought together students, faculty and representatives from various institutions to celebrate the theme of “unity in diversity”.
The event was attended by Principal Secretary to Arts and Culture department, Frederick Kharkongor, who, in his address, applauded the university’s efforts in embodying Patel’s vision.
Kharkongor shared inspiring quotes on unity and resilience, urging attendees to work together for a harmonious India.
On the occasion, Cultural performances, including dance and folk songs from Tripura, Garo, Mizoram, Assam, Khasi, and Pnar groups, celebrated the region’s diverse heritage.
Students and faculty from Kiang Nangbah Government College and other schools from Jowai joined in, adding vibrancy to the celebration.
Meanwhile, the Corporate Office in Shillong marked National Unity Day with a “Run for Unity”, which was organised in collaboration with Dorbar Dong Lumsohra, Laitumkhrah.
The Acting Rangbah Dong, Rupert Wankhar, administered the unity pledge to participants before the run, which started at Madan Iew Rynghep.
