JOWAI, Nov 3: Commuters travelling along the Shillong-Jowai National Highway-6 (NH-6), particularly on the stretch from Mukhla-Ummulong-Mookyndur to Puriang, are voicing increasing frustration and concern over the deteriorating condition of the road. This 20-km stretch, essential for regional trade and connectivity, is riddled with potholes that have made travel hazardous.
Local drivers report that the worsening condition of the highway, especially near the Wah Mynsoo area, has led to frequent traffic jams, severely disrupting travel times.
Heavy vehicles, including trucks, often struggle to navigate these damaged sections, resulting in delays that can last for hours. “Every time we take this route, we risk damage to our vehicles and face long waits due to traffic congestion from overturned trucks,” one frustrated driver remarked.
Residents living along the highway are particularly concerned about the safety risks the road’s condition poses.
They report an increase in accidents and are calling on local authorities to urgently address the need for repairs. “We have approached the authorities multiple times, but little has changed. The situation is worsening, and it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured,” a local resident shared.
The NH-6 is one of the region’s busiest trade routes, linking multiple villages, districts, and neighboring states. Its significance cannot be overstated, as it enables the movement of goods and services crucial to the local economy. However, the current state of the road presents serious challenges not only for commuters but also for businesses that depend on this essential infrastructure.
Authorities have yet to respond to the community’s concerns, and residents are urging immediate action to restore the highway to a safe and functional state. With traffic increasing and the rainy season approaching, the need for repairs has become urgent, underscoring the importance of proactive measures to ensure the safety and efficiency of this vital transport link.
Local leaders are calling for a comprehensive assessment of the highway and a firm commitment from the government to prioritise its maintenance. Until action is taken, commuters and residents alike remain anxious about the future of their daily travel on NH-6.
