SHILLONG, Nov 7: A section of VPP leaders were left embarrassed on Thursday after NEHUSU expressed its strong reservation against “outside forces” interfering into the internal matters of the university.
The NEHUSU members were visibly unhappy when the VPP leaders emerged along with Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla from his chamber.
NEHUSU president Sandy Sohtun charged forward when the VPP leaders asked the agitating students to gather for an address by the VC. “We do not want any outside force to interfere into our internal matters,” he warned.
The NEHUSU president asked the VPP leaders to leave the university campus, warning that they would lock the campus and prevent anyone from move outside, forcing the VPP leaders to make a hurried exit.
VC calls magistrate after students lock his chamber
The VC was forced to seek help from a magistrate after agitating members of NEHUSU and KSU NEHU unit locked the entrance door of his chamber following his meeting with some VPP leaders.
Magistrate Shanborlang Warjri arrived at the campus and held a discussion with the students.
The students insisted that the VC should be dropped to his official quarter and should not be allowed to come out until he resigns.
The magistrate assured the students that he will drop the VC to his quarter after which the students allowed the VC to come out of his chamber.
Hek seeks Union Education minister’s intervention
Cabinet Minister AL Hek on Thursday sought the intervention of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to end the ongoing NEHU imbroglio. In a letter to Pradhan, Hek highlighted the grievances of the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers Association expressing their resentment on the attitude of the NEHU Vice Chancellor.
“I shall be deeply indebted if you kindly look into the matter with reference to the grievances expressed by the teachers’ body for the smooth functioning of the university and to avoid the loss of the educational aspiration of the students. Your intervention on the matter will be much appreciated,” Hek wrote.
