SHILLONG, Nov 10: The ongoing crisis in the North-Eastern Hill University took a turn for the worse following an attack on the official quarter of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla on Sunday after which he has gone “missing”.
Miscreants damaged the official vehicle of the Vice Chancellor and also destroyed the window panes and utensils inside the kitchen.
The CCTV cameras and an electric pole were also damaged in the attack. Sources revealed that the CCTV cameras in the VC’s quarter are not functioning. The miscreants took out the CCTV cameras installed behind the VC’s quarter, the sources said.
NEHU Acting Registrar, B Rynjah filed an FIR at Mawlai police station in this connection after which district administration officials along with a police team led by SP (City) Dara Aswaghosh rushed to NEHU to take stock of the situation and enhance security around the VC’s quarter.
The SP (City) said the VC was not present when they arrived at his quarter.
Meanwhile, speculations are rife about the whereabouts of the VC.
Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang told The Shillong Times that the government knows the present location of the VC.
She, however, confirmed that the VC was not present in his quarter when it was vandalised.
The acting Registrar said she has no information on whether the VC was present inside the quarter when it was attacked. She said she learnt of the attack only in the morning.
None of the NEHU officials are aware of his current location.
Members of the Research Scholars’ Forum (RSF) and NEHUSU questioned the acting Registrar on the whereabouts of the VC.
According to them, the matter is quite serious since the VC has been “missing” for more than 12 hours.
They also wondered if the NEHU administration would be filing a missing complaint with the police.
The acting registrar told them that she has asked the NEHU PRO to contact the VC.
She told the scholars that the NEHU PRO called her back after an hour, informing that the VC had picked up his call but there was no clarity about his location.
RSF president Superior Syngkli claimed that the Chief Security Officer of the VC assured them that they will file a missing complaint since the VC left the campus without submitting his leave application.
