SHILLONG, Nov 12: Former Mawhati MDC James Sylliang joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) on Tuesday, bringing along a large group of supporters. The UDP anticipates more political figures from across the region will join as the MDC elections draw closer.
“This is a significant boost for the party, with Sylliang joining alongside many supporters. We are actively engaging at the grassroots level, and we expect more to join the UDP bandwagon in other areas as well,” said UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh.
He noted that the party is conducting a series of meetings daily in preparation for the upcoming Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections. According to Mawthoh, the candidate selection process has already begun, and UDP units at the block level are working on it.
Once the candidates are identified, their names will be submitted to the State Election Commission (SEC) for review.
Mawthoh emphasised that the party’s strength lies in its grassroots support and leadership, which are only growing stronger. He highlighted that the UDP has been favoured by former leaders of pressure groups who align with its ideology and track record.
