Tura, Nov 15: The issue of the transfer of hoolock gibbons from the Sonja Wildlife Rescue Centre in Garo Hills to Umtrew Zoo in Khasi Hills was on Friday raised by the AHAM with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, where it reiterated that it would never allow it to happen.

The issue was raised after a meeting on the issue, purportedly took place on November 14 at the Secretariat in Shillong to which the Officer in-charge of the Sonja Wildlife Rescue Centre was called to attend.

The letter addressed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma by the organization claimed that the attempt was being made by vested interests for their own gains.

“The whole reason for this is ultimately Umtrew Zoo. This zoo needs to be filled with animals and the Gibbons rescued and under rehabilitation at Sonja WRC are all the valuable life stock available?. The idea is, exchanging them for a Giraffe and other animals. For this, some are ready to do anything, as long as it serves their personal agenda,” it stated, while vowing to never allow it.
