SHILLONG, Nov 18: In a bid to highlight the critical role of education and timely intervention in preventing blindness in premature infants, Bansara Eye Care Center, in collaboration with Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) Meghalaya Chapter, hosted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) on World Prematurity Day at Courtyard Marriott Shillong.
Held under the theme “Born Too Soon,” the event brought together pediatricians, neonatologists, ophthalmologists, and nurses from across the region to raise awareness and enhance skills in preventing and managing ROP — a leading cause of blindness in premature infants.
Chief guest Dr Anand Vinekar, Head of Pediatric Retina Service at Narayana Nethralaya Eye Institute, Bangalore, emphasised the importance of early detection and shared insights on the KIDROP telemedicine-based ROP screening programme. Guest of honour, Dr Neela E Kharsahnoh, Director of Health Services (MCH&FW), also addressed the gathering. Bansara Eye Hospital announced a new collaboration with KIDROP and Have-A-Heart, Bangalore, to expand telemedicine-based ROP screening in Meghalaya, aiming to ensure timely detection and treatment for at-risk infants.
