SHILLONG, Nov 19: The season’s first export consignment of GI-tagged Khasi Mandarin was dispatched to Lulu Mall, Dubai. Facilitated by the Jirang Farmer Producer Company (FPC) in Ri-Bhoi, the 1-metric tonne (MT) consignment was transported via Air India under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development Cargo from Guwahati Customs, marking the region’s first direct export using this route.
The Jirang FPC, established for the North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) in 2017, is a key player. With government support, the FPC now operates high-tech sorting, grading, and waxing facilities that ensure export-quality produce and enhance efficiency. Similar upgrades have been provided to farmer collectives like Rongmil IVCS in East Garo Hills and Narwang MPCS in East Jaintia Hills, enabling them to manage larger volumes while reducing post-harvest losses.
Meghalaya’s export journey began in 2022 with a trial shipment of 5 MT of Khasi Mandarin and pineapple to the Middle East. Building on this, the state exported 20 MT in 2023. This year’s direct export from Guwahati to Dubai is a major breakthrough, reducing transportation costs and improving transit times.
To further promote its premium produce, the state has organised Pineapple and Khasi Mandarin festivals in cities like Delhi and Bangalore.
