SHILLONG, Nov 29: In a much-needed shot in the arm of the grand old party, more than 500 new members from various political parties, including the NPP, VPP, TMC and UDP, joined the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) during a programme on Friday at Congress Bhawan.
The influx of new members is seen as a major boost to the party’s strength in the state.
Expressing optimism, Opposition Chief Whip and Congress leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh said the large number of people coming out and joining the Congress is a clear sign of the party’s growing influence in Meghalaya.
“Though now we have one MLA and two MDCs, still they are willing to join the party. That only shows that people would like to support and ensure that the Congress party becomes stronger to serve the interest of the state,” said Lyngdoh.
He pointed out that former members from other parties, including TMC, NPP, UDP and VPP, have joined Congress because they believe it is the only party that can truly serve the diverse needs of Meghalaya’s population, irrespective of caste, creed or sex.
Referring to the enrolment of the members from the Nongthymmai TMC, he said a welcome meeting for these new members would be organised soon.
Lyngdoh also revealed that more people from different parts of the state have expressed interest in joining the Congress, with plans to hold meetings in their respective constituencies once they officially join the party.
Meanwhile, MPCC vice president and MDC PN Syiem emphasised the importance of Congress in shaping Meghalaya’s future, stating that the party is focused on building a dynamic team of both young and experienced leaders to drive the state’s development.
“The Congress party has consistently supported the people of Meghalaya since the state’s inception. With renewed energy and commitment, the MPCC looks forward to welcoming more members to the Congress party,” he added.
