Robbery, vandalism outside SPC raise safety concerns
SHILLONG, Nov 29: A recent robbery and car vandalism incident involving senior journalist, Martin Nongkhlaw, outside the Shillong Press Club has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of citizens in the city. Condemning the incident, the Shillong Press Club, in a statement, called for an expedited police investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice. The SPC said the attack was part of a troubling rise in theft cases in Shillong, with even private residences and church premises not spared from the growing menace. It said miscreants have been reported to enter these areas and commit theft, adding to the rising concern. “It is a matter of concern for the state as such cases are reported almost on a daily basis. We request the Government to formulate a plan of action to instill a sense of safety and security for the citizens of this state,” the SPC said.
Prog on legal rights for children

Nongpoh, Nov 29: A one-day campaign on opening doors for education to children, and school dropouts under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) was organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), was held at Jatah village, Ri Bhoi district on Friday.
During the programme, resource persons highlighted various issues faced by the children and deliberated on protecting children and their legal rights. Also, various welfare schemes implemented for the benefit of the citizens were highlighted.
The resource persons spoke on the objectives of DLSA and its functions and enlightened publicly that the DLSA aims to provide free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of the society to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not left behind to any citizen because of financial problem or any other disabilities.
The speakers deliberated on fundamental rights and the right to free and compulsory education Act 2005, the Midday-meal scheme for school children, the Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act 1986, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 and other welfare schemes.
Muga Field Day benefits farmers

TURA, Nov 29: Around 70 farmers benefited from a Muga Field Day organised by CSB, MESSO, P-3 Unit, Romparaon in Resubelpara, North Garo Hills.
The programme emphasized the quality seed production procedure, care, and sanitation measures to be taken during the grainage operation. Also, it explained the advantage of Muga rearing over the traditional crops. Resource person elaborated on the different diseases of Muga and their symptoms to identify them and explained the importance of disinfection for controlling the diseases.
MRB opens branch in Tikrikilla

Shillong, Nov 29: Meghalaya Rural Bank (MRB) Tikrikilla branch was inaugurated by the Principal Tikrikilla College Manseng A Sangma on Friday.
Lauding the initiative, Sangma hoped that the bank would cater to the needs of the people with its services. The Tikrikilla branch, with Subankar Das as the branch head, is the 11th Garo Hills-based branch of Meghalaya Rural Bank. The Bank, which was started on December 29, 1981, as Ka Bank Nongkyndong Ri Khasi Jaintia, was renamed Meghalaya Rural Bank on May 1, 2007. With a business of over five thousand crore rupees and a staff strength of 415, the bank has been serving the people of Meghalaya for 44 years.
Drawing, essay competitions in EKH
SHILLONG, Nov 29: As part of Back to School campaign, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Khasi Hills, will organise a drawing/painting and essay competitions for children aged 6 to 18 years from December 3 to 5. According to a statement here, the event will take place across various Community and Rural Development (C & RD) Blocks in East Khasi Hills district. Beginning at 11:30 am each day, the competition aims to emphasise the importance of education and reduce school dropout rates. During the competitions, participants will explore themes such as ‘Importance of Education’, ‘Stay in School and End School Drop-out’, or ‘Steps to Eradicate School Drop-out’. The competition will be held at multiple schools, including Raid Shabong Border Area Govt. Secondary School in Pynursla, Rev. JJM Nicholas Roy UP School in Mawsynram, Tirot Sing Memorial Secondary School in Mawkdok, Sohiong Higher Secondary School in Sohiong, among others. Winners of the competitions will be awarded cash prizes and certificates as recognition of their efforts. Meanwhile, entry forms have been made available online at districts.ecourts.gov.in/shillong and can be submitted either in person at the DLSA Shillong Front Office or via email at [email protected]. The deadline for the submission of form is December 2.
