NEW DELHI, Nov 29: Voice of the People Party MP from Shillong, Ricky Andrew J Syngkon came down heavily on both the ruling BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led opposition parties for disrupting the parliamentary proceedings for the fourth consecutive day on Friday for which no business could be carried out in either of the Houses.
The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned till the next working day on Monday amid chaos. The opposition’s relentless protests over various issues, including alleged bribery charges against a prominent business group, led to repeated adjournments and ultimately, the premature adjournment of both the Houses.
A dejected Syngkon told The Shillong Times that the ruling and the opposition parties are responsible for such adjournments and neither seems interested in a mutual solution. “This has resulted in days of losses of important business proceedings which affect the entire country and mainly the Northeast,” he said.
It is not possible even to raise routine questions and get clarification from the government, he said. There is an immediate need for a constructive debate to address public concerns through parliamentary processes, he added.
In the Lok Sabha, despite repeated appeals from Speaker Om Birla, the opposition members from Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, and others continued their protests, disrupting the Question Hour and forcing the House to adjourn till noon. Similarly, in the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected adjournment motion notices.
As both Houses were adjourned for the day, the opposition’s relentless protests once again hindered parliamentary business and raised concerns about the efficacy of the legislative process. “The treasury bench and the opposition parties must sit together and iron out a solution. Not allowing Parliament to function is not an option,” the Shillong MP said.
“The government on its part should become accommodative and the opposition should not disrupt the Houses just for the sake of opposition. There has to be an acceptable solution and no issue is above resolution,” he said.
Syngkon pointed out that a fortune is spent on convening and running Parliament and this huge public money is going to waste. We are all losing so many days without any work and out of our constituencies, he said.
The major opposition parties are divided over which issues to raise in the House. While Congress wants an immediate discussion on the Adani indictment issue, the SP wants a debate on the Sambhal violence in Uttar Pradesh.
Trinamool Congress went a step further and demanded discussions on public-centric issues instead of being “hijacked” by some opposition parties.
