Undertrial found dead in Jowai jail; suicide suspected

JOWAI, Nov 30: Leki Phawa, an undertrial at the District Jail and Correctional Home in Jowai, was found dead in the early hours of Friday, in a suspected case of suicide.
Phawa, a resident of Wahiajer village in West Jaintia Hills district, had been in custody since September 2024, facing trial under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for a case registered at the Jowai Police Station.
As part of the ongoing investigation into his death, a post-mortem examination was conducted on Saturday at the Jowai Civil Hospital in Ialong.
