Shillong, Dec 1: Meghalaya’s four-member para athlete contingent has returned from the 1st North East Para Sports Meet in Guwahati with two gold and two silver medals.
The team comprised Darity Khongthaw (badminton and shot put), Prisca Pyngrope (shot put and swimming), Rinalin Nongdhar (badminton, table tennis and shot put) and Angelina Thyrniang (badminton and table tennis).
Prisca secured gold in the shot put, while Rinalin clinched gold in table tennis and silver in shot put. Angelina, meanwhile, claimed silver in TT.
While a tremendous success, the athletes achieved these feats with minimal support, which calls into question Meghalaya’s approach towards para sports. The state has little to no government or private support for athletes with disabilities.
