Meghalaya’s first state varsity gets woman VC

SHILLONG, Dec 4: The Captain Williamson Sangma State University in Tura, which is Meghalaya’s first state university, will get a woman head with the state government on Wednesday appointing Dr Vasanthi Vijayakumar as Vice Chancellor of the varsity.
“The Governor of Meghalaya is pleased to appoint Dr Vasanthi Vijayakumar as the Vice Chancellor of Captain Williamson Sangma State University, Tura with a fixed pay of Rs 2.1 lakh per month with a special allowance of Rs 5,000 per month with effect from the date of taking over charge,” a notification signed by the Joint Secretary of the Education Department said on Wednesday.
Vijayakumar currently works as associate professor & HOD of the Department of History at Madras Christian College.
Meanwhile, the government also appointed retired Meghalaya Forest Service official DK Newar as the finance officer of the state university with effect from the date of taking over charge.
“During his appointment, Newar will get a last pay drawn minus pension and allowances,” the notification added.
