JOWAI, Dec 6: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has emphasised the importance of empowering persons with disabilities (PwDs) and ensuring their active participation in society.
Speaking at a programme to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Thursday, Dhar highlighted the need for inclusivity and sustainable opportunities for PwDs.
He also underscored various government initiatives aimed at supporting individuals and families, particularly in education, healthcare, skill development and livelihood opportunities.
The deputy chief minister then urged the parents to engage actively with the Social Welfare Department to access these resources, ensuring a brighter future for their children.
Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner DV Lyngdoh inspired attendees with the story of Alexander Lyngdoh, an international arm-wrestling champion who triumphed despite physical challenges.
Similarly, CA Ram Kyndiah from the District Research Centre on Disabilities Affairs emphasised the significance of obtaining a disability certificate and Unique Disability ID (UDID) card to unlock government benefits and services.
The event, held at Sein Raij Community Hall in Ummulong, was organised by the District Social Welfare Officer of West Jaintia Hills District and the People Welfare Development Society under the theme ‘Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future’.
The programme also featured insights from District Social Welfare Officer Y Najiar on the event’s theme, while lawyer I. Khyriem elaborated on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Some of the other highlights of the programme were interactive games, activities, distribution of gifts to all PwDs in attendance and a medical camp led by Dr L Rymbai, who provided check-ups and free medicines.
