SHILLONG, Dec 11: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Wednesday took a swipe at the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Congress, accusing them of underestimating the intelligence of the electorate.
“Who are they trying to fool with their theatrics? They think the electorate is gullible to their antics. This is an insult to the people,” VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said. “These political parties assume the electorate lacks political understanding and take them for a ride,” he added.
Myrboh was referring to reports suggesting that the Congress is set to sever ties with the NPP-led Executive Committee (EC) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), with an official withdrawal expected before the Council’s winter session, scheduled to begin on December 19.
The VPP spokesperson reminded the public how the Congress had stubbornly remained in coalition with the NPP in the KHADC EC despite facing severe criticism.
“It is very clear that the Congress in Meghalaya functions as Team B of the NPP. Pulling out of the NPP-led coalition now is not only foolish but also an attempt to mislead the people — a futile exercise,” he remarked.
Emphasising that the electorate is not unaware of such political manoeuvres, Myrboh offered advice to Congress MDCs. “My advice to the Congress MDCs is to stay in power and at least continue drawing their salaries. After all, there are only one or two months left before the polls, so they might as well collect their paychecks,” he quipped.
