UDP lambasts VPP’s electoral dominance claims

SHILLONG, Dec 13: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Friday cast aspersions on the claims made by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) about asserting dominance in the upcoming autonomous district council (ADC) elections.
Contending that such assertions must be backed by substantial evidence rather than hollow rhetoric, UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh said, “Based on what? If people say Party A or Party B will sweep the elections, there should be some basis.”
He said the UDP instead has the right to claim that it will sweep the upcoming elections based on their performance.
“When they go through the performance report of UDP, I am sure those who have not changed their minds will do so,” he added.
The UDP chief further noted that voter behaviour in the ADC polls differs from Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, with ground reports indicating a distinct mindset among the electorates.
Earlier, the VPP, while announcing its list of candidates, had expressed confidence in its electoral prospects in 2025.
It highlighted its commitment to improving the political system, enhancing governance and aligning with public interests, asserting that people’s desire for change positions them strongly in the upcoming ADC elections.
It may be mentioned that the upcoming elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) have drawn significant attention, especially with the VPP’s emergence as a new player on the political landscape.
