Shillong, Dec 18: A postal stamp honouring Khasi laureate U Soso Tham was released by the Ministry of Communications through the Department of Posts during an event held at the bust of the legendary poet on the NEHU campus to observe his 84th death anniversary.
This release follows earlier postal stamps issued by the Meghalaya Division of the Department of Posts to honour Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem and Jaintia patriot U Kiang Nangbah.

Lambokstarwell Marngar and Senior Superintendent of Posts for the Meghalaya Division, Anjali Varma. Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) also paid floral tributes to the legendary poet.
Born in 1873 in Sohra, U Soso Tham is celebrated as a pioneer of Khasi secular literature. Known for his unique diction and innovative use of Khasi idioms inspired by English poetry, he was the first to elevate Khasi literary expression to new heights.
His masterpiece, Ka Duitara Kshiar (The Golden Harp, 1925), is a distinguished compilation of poems and remains a cornerstone of Khasi literature. Widely regarded as the greatest literary icon in Meghalaya’s history, U Soso Tham is remembered for his timeless contributions to poetry and literature.
