SHILLONG, Dec 23: The Seng Khasi Laitkor Pyllun celebrated its Golden Jubilee at Madan Laitkor Pyllun on Sunday.
The celebration was originally scheduled for May 28 this year, but it had to be postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.
Leading up to the event, a year-long series of programmes was organised to showcase Khasi traditions, customs, and culture including workshops on traditional musical instruments, familiarisation of Jingsneng Tymmen (a compilation of the ancient Khasi moral code and rules of etiquette) for the youth, displays of Khasi attire and jewelry, the preparation of Shanduwa (a high canopy made of cloth placed above the funeral pyre) and Krong (bamboo biers), and the publication of a commemorative souvenir, among other activities.
The grand finale witnessed the participation of Seng Khasi branches from across the region.
PD Nonrum, vice president of Seng Khasi Kmie, Shillong, addressed the gathering, while T Mylliemngap, vice president of Seng Khasi Laitkor, presented an oral history of the organisation.
A souvenir marking the milestone was released during the event. The celebrations also featured a cultural extravaganza and a pageant walk, where the winners of ‘U Rangkynsai’ and ‘Ka Theijanai’ were announced, celebrating the rich heritage of the Khasi community.
