SHILLONG, Dec 31: The State BJP is gearing up to begin its screening process for over 10 applicants seeking to contest the upcoming KHADC and JHADC elections.
“We have received more than 10 applications, and the State Election Committee will soon convene to review and screen the candidates,” said Mariahom Kharkrang, the State BJP’s chief spokesperson.
Kharkrang clarified that the BJP will not contest all constituencies but will focus on select ones, based on grassroots support and the candidates’ winnability. He also highlighted the positive response the party has been receiving at the grassroots level, stressing that candidate selection will be a calculated and strategic process.
Speaking about the party’s broader approach to the MDC elections, Kharkrang stated, “In my personal opinion, we should participate in all elections. That’s how ground-level workers stay engaged. If we suddenly decide not to contest, where will these workers go? They would be left without direction. So, we must contest all elections.”
Historically, the State BJP has taken a selective approach to elections. For example, during the last Lok Sabha elections, the party chose to support its alliance partner, the NPP, instead of fielding its own candidate.
