NEHU gets Rs 16.5-cr grant to improve medical sector

SHILLONG, Dec 31: In a substantial boost to its medical device sector and biomedical research capabilities, the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Shillong has received a central government grant of Rs 16.5 crore. This funding is part of the government’s broader initiative to strengthen India’s medical device industry, reducing reliance on imports and fostering global competitiveness.
The grant will be utilised to launch new academic programmes, including a Master of Technology (M.Tech) programme in Medical Devices and a Diploma in Medical Device Manufacturing and Quality. These programmes aim to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the medical device sector.
The initiative will foster partnerships between industries, healthcare institutions, and students, providing hands-on experience and boosting graduates’ employability. The program will also address unique healthcare challenges in Meghalaya and surrounding regions, contributing to region-specific solutions and attracting talent and investment.
A state-of-the-art laboratory will be established, featuring cutting-edge equipment such as a Confocal Microscope and Multielectrode Array System.
