Assam’s Uma Chetry named in India squad

GUWAHATI, Jan. 6: Assam’s wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry has earned a place in the Indian senior women’s cricket team for the upcoming IDFC First Bank ODI series against Ireland.
The Indian women’s selection committee announced the squad on January 6, with the series set to begin on January 10 at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, Gujarat.
Chetry’s inclusion in the 15-member squad marks a significant achievement for Assam cricket, as the talented player is set to represent India in this highly anticipated three-match series.
The matches are scheduled for January 10, 12, and 15.In response to the announcement, Assam Cricket Association (ACA) president Taranga Gogoi expressed immense pride in Chetry’s accomplishment, saying, “Uma’s selection is a proud moment for Assam cricket. We wish her all the best as she represents India.”
ACA Secretary Tridib Konwar also extended congratulations, acknowledging Uma’s hard work and dedication that have led her to this milestone. “Her perseverance has brought her this far, and we hope she continues to excel and reach even greater heights in the future,” Konwar added.
Alongside Chetry’s inclusion, Smriti Mandhana has been named the captain of the Indian women’s team for this series, with Harmanpreet Kaur being rested due to a knee injury.
Pacer Renuka Singh Thakur has also been given a break to manage her workload after a stellar performance in the series against the West Indies.
