SHILLONG, Jan 6: The NEHUSU and the NEHU unit of the Khasi Students’ Union on Monday urged the state government to pressure the Ministry of Education to act upon the recommendations of the two-member committee regarding alleged mismanagement and administrative failures in the university.
NEHUSU president Sandy Sohtun told reporters that they are planning to meet the Governor, who is the chief rector of the university, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, and government officials as they are in the dark about the Ministry’s silent on the report of the committee.
He said they will soon hold a meeting of the executive committee before meeting the state leaders on the issue.
Replying to a query, Sohtun said they have suspended their agitation since the winter break is on.
“We will wait for the decision of the two-member committee before deciding on our future agitations,” he said.
Earlier, the student bodies sought Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s immediate intervention for action on the two-member committee’s inquiry report.
In a letter addressed to Pradhan, NEHUSU general secretary Toniho Kharsati referred to the ministry’s order dated November 14, 2024, and said the student bodies submitted all relevant documents and evidence against Vice Chancellor PS Shukla to the two-member committee.
Stating that the competent authority granted a 15-day extension to finalise the report according to the probe panel’s chairman’s letter dated November 28, 2024, the NEHUSU general secretary said they are yet to receive any notification or update regarding the report of the committee after almost two months.
“In light of the significant concerns raised and the urgency of the matter, we respectfully request you to take immediate action and provide a formal response to the committee’s findings at the earliest possible date. Your timely intervention in this matter is of utmost importance to address the grievances and restore confidence in the governance of NEHU,” Kharsati said.
