JOWAI, Jan 13: Sports Minister Shakhliar Warjri unveiled the official theme song, video, and mascot for the much-anticipated 6th Meghalaya Games in a ceremony held at the District Library Auditorium in Mynthong, Jowai, on Moday.
The theme song, titled Niom Beit Naphang, is composed to capture the spirit of sportsmanship and unity, while the mascot, U Kiang, symbolises the resilience and determination of a freedom fighter. The unveiling of these symbols marks a significant step forward in building excitement and enthusiasm ahead of the event.
Warjri stressed the importance of investing in sports infrastructure and youth development, noting that sports not only foster discipline and build character but also play a key role in uniting communities.
He highlighted the state government’s commitment to improving sports facilities, emphasising on re-purposing of existing venues in schools and colleges to serve as long-term assets for the community.
“The government’s focus is on maximising the use of current sports facilities instead of building new ones,” said Warjri.
“This approach ensures that these resources continue to benefit educational institutions and local communities, even after the events conclude.”
He further outlined the government’s vision to empower the youth of Meghalaya to excel in sports at both state and national levels, acknowledging that while results may take time, the long-term benefits would be substantial.
Warjri also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the various government officials, local representatives, and community organisations who have supported the vision. He wished the athletes preparing for the upcoming events the best of luck and success.
The event, which served as a curtain raiser for the upcoming sporting extravaganza, was attended by several prominent figures, including local MLA Wailadmiki Shylla and various government officials.
Following the ceremony, the Warjri, accompanied by Shylla and event organizers, conducted an inspection of several venues to assess the readiness for the upcoming National Games.
The ceremony was also marked by a captivating performance from the Elev8 Tribes Choir, who added a melodious touch to the occasion with two performances.
The Meghalaya Games are expected to bring together athletes from across the state, showcasing the talent and sportsmanship of the youth while promoting unity and community development.
“Starting on the 20th of January, this edition of the Meghalaya Games will bring together 3,500 participants and 500 technical officials, competing in 25 sports disciplines and 4 demonstration sports, all vying for a total of over 1,600 medals. These figures are not mere statistics; they reflect the passion, dedication, and hard work of countless individuals who have nurtured Meghalaya’s sporting ecosystem,” Working President of Meghalaya State Olympic Association John F Kharshiing said.
