New Delhi, Jan 22: Sachin Chamaria, a para-athlete from North-East, bagged his 5th consecutive Gold medal in the BC3 (Male) Individual category and a Silver medal in the BC3 Pair, at the just concluded 9th Boccia National Championship this month at Visakhapatnam. Sachin won the Silver with Sarita Dwivedi.
The event marks the first-ever national-level para championship in Andhra Pradesh, bringing together over 100 para-athletes from 21 States from across the country.
Sachin had made history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Boccia Challenger in November last year. Competing in the BC3 (Male) individual category, Sachin clinched the solitary gold medal for the country at the event held in Bahrain.
The para-athletes demonstrated extraordinary skills in quarterfinals, semifinals, and also doubles matches.
Earlier in the same year, Sachin also secured a silver medal in the BC3 (Male) individual category and a bronze medal in the BC3 (Male) Pair category at the World Boccia Challenger 2024 in Egypt. These achievements make him the first Indian male athlete to earn medals in two international Boccia events within the same calendar year, cementing his legacy in the sport.
Despite a severe spinal cord injury at an early age, Sachin has defied the odds to achieve this remarkable feat at an international level in the sport of Boccia. Incidentally, Sachin, son of Rajendra Chamaria, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Meghalaya-based Star Cement Limited was also named the Brand Ambassador for the 1st North East Para Games 2024 by the Paralympic Association of Assam.
Boccia is a paralympic precision ball sport tailored for individuals with severe physical disabilities. It is a game of strategy, focus, and precision. Players aim to throw leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball, known as the jack.
