SHILLONG, Jan 22: Residents of a village in Sohiong constituency called Krang have been without electricity for the past two weeks due to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL)’s alleged failure to restore power.
According to the villagers, the power disruption is attributed to a damaged transformer at Krang Nongrum. MeECL staff reportedly stated that the delay in repairs is due to the age of the transformer, which has made restoration efforts challenging. The issue has not only affected Krang village but also nearby areas such as Krang Nongrum Centre and Krang Nongrngi, all of which remain without electricity.
The village leaders have approached the local MLA of Sohiong, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh, urging him to intervene and expedite the restoration of power to these villages.
The Sordar of Krang Nongrum, Roning Nongrum, expressed concern over the significant impact of the power outage on residents, particularly students preparing for their board examinations. Senior resident K Kharbuki has called upon MeECL to take immediate steps to install a new transformer. He also suggested fencing the area around the transformer to prevent any potential accidents. The prolonged outage has left villagers frustrated and has raised questions about the efficiency of MeECL in addressing critical infrastructure issues.
