TB elimination campaign: Govt asks people to come forward for testing

SHILLONG, Jan 24: As part of the 100-day TB elimination campaign, which was launched on December 7, 2024, the state government has asked people, who have been experiencing certain symptoms, to come forward to get tested for tuberculosis. According to a statement, the individuals at higher risk of TB include those who have had TB in the last five years, are in close contact with TB patients, are aged 60 or above, are malnourished, are current or former smokers, or have diabetes. In this regard, the Mission Director, NHM, Meghalaya has urged anyone in these risk categories or experiencing symptoms such as persistent cough with mucus, chest pain, weight loss, blood in sputum, fever, or night sweats to get tested immediately. “The complete course of treatment for TB is available at the nearest health centers,” the statement said. It may be mentioned that during the campaign, which will continue till March 24, health camps will be organised to facilitate TB testing and chest X-rays when necessary.

Govt invites tenders ahead of QR code introduction on liquor bottles

SHILLONG, Jan 24: The plan to introduce a Quick Response (QR) code system for all liquor bottles sold in Meghalaya is set to become a reality soon. The Commissioner of Excise on Friday invited tenders from interested suppliers within Meghalaya for the procurement and supply of polyester-based tamper-evident security holograms with QR code labels. These labels will be affixed to liquor, beer and wine bottles, including cans and tetra packs, sold in the state. The government claims that this initiative will boost revenue generation and curb illegal activities in the liquor market. With this move, the state expects to generate Rs 500 crore from liquor sales in the current financial year.

Ex-MDC alleges fund misuse, seeks action against block & VEC officials

TURA, Jan 24: Former GHADC MDC Sofior Rahman has sought action against officials of the Selsella C&RD Block in West Garo Hills for allegedly misappropriating PMAY-G house funds, which was due to a beneficiary of Phersakandi village. In his complaint filed to the West Garo Hills Deputy commissioner on Thursday, the former MDC sought action against the officials. According to Rahman, the funds due to one, Hasina Bibi, wife of Abdul Latif Sk of Phersakandi, who happened to be a beneficiary of PMAY-G house, were misappropriated. As per Rahman’s claim, an amount of Rs 1.3 lakh, due to the beneficiary, were misappropriated and transferred to some other person’s bank account. Alleging that the block official, along with the secretary and president of the Phersakandi VEC misappropriated the funds, Rahman sought action against all the persons involved in the alleged scam.
