SHILLONG, Jan 25: Wari Chora in Garo Hills has come a long way from being a dreaded militant-infested area to one of the most visited tourist spots today.
“There is a popular tourist spot Wari Chora which is on the border between Chokpot and Rongara Siju. This area was once a terrorist camp full of militants but today, it has become a major tourist spot,” Education Minister and Rongara-Siju MLA, Rakkam A. Sangma said.
He attributed the transformation of the place partly to better road connectivity in the Garo Hills after the MDA government took charge in Meghalaya.
“The local communities are earning through transportation, catering, homestay, hotel, guides, and boating. Tourism has totally transformed Wari Chora,” he said.
“I don’t have the (footfall) data but it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Garo Hills. People are crazy about the spot,” Sangma said.
Highlighting his interactions with a few visiting tourists, he said: “They said the experience is surreal and nobody regrets visiting the place. The stream, trekking, and forest rivers provide a beautiful landscape for the tourists.”
He said the state government helped the locals come up with homestays and provide transportation for tourists.
“Tourism is our future in the state. Our students and youth should learn hospitality and how to become entrepreneurs as it is a demanding industry,” he said.
Wari Chora, nestled in the South Garo Hills, is a hidden paradise that showcases nature in its purest form. This enchanting canyon, sculpted by the crystal-clear Siju River, is framed by towering cliffs and dense forests, creating a dreamlike setting.
Wari Chora offers boat rides through narrow gorges, where sunlight seeps through rugged rock formations, casting a golden glow on the shimmering emerald waters. The peaceful ambience, accompanied by the soothing sounds of birds and the gentle ripples of water against the canyon walls, makes it a haven for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
Apart from its stunning scenery, Wari Chora offers an exhilarating experience with its unexplored caves, hidden waterfalls, and intriguing rock formations.
Reaching the place requires a trek through dense forests, enhancing the thrill of discovery. Free from commercialisation, the canyon provides an unfiltered connection to nature, making it an ideal escape for those seeking serenity and adventure.
Whether it’s the magical interplay of light and shadow on the water, the mysterious depths of the river, or the overwhelming sense of tranquillity, Wari Chora remains one of Meghalaya’s most spectacular yet underrated tourist spots, promising an unforgettable journey into the heart of nature’s splendour.
