SHILLONG, Jan 27: Aiming to transform the Urkaliar area, previously a dumping zone and hotspot for anti-social activities, into a cleaner and safer space while also protecting natural resources like water and forests, an entrance gate and boundary wall was inaugurated at Urkaliar by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah as part of a project funded under the Locality Beautification and Enhancement Competition Programme.
The DC’s office had sanctioned Rs 4.64 lakh to the Urkaliar Dorbar Shnong in October 2024 for constructing the entrance gate and wall near the football ground at Urkaliar.
Speaking at the inauguration, DC Kurbah encouraged the village authorities and residents of nearby localities, including Nongmensong, Demseiniong, Umpling, and MES, to work together in safeguarding rivers and neighbourhoods from turning into dumping grounds or havens for anti-social behaviour.
She reaffirmed the district administration’s commitment to promoting river rejuvenation initiatives and combating drug abuse. Kurbah also called on all stakeholders to take collective responsibility for maintaining clean, healthy, and safe localities.
