Former SA prez’s daughter arrested on terrorism charges

Johannesburg, Jan 30: A daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma has been arrested and is expected to appear in court on Thursday to face terrorism charges. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, who is also a member of the South African Parliament, is accused of inciting violence during riots in July 2021 which led to the deaths of more than 350 people. Zuma-Sambudla handed herself over to police on Thursday to face charges under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act and incitement to commit violence, police said. “The arrest is as a result of a meticulous investigation by the Durban Crimes Against the State unit of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation, following the unrest that brought the country to a standstill in 2021,” police spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said. Nurse dies of Ebola outbreak in Uganda

Kampala, Jan 30: A nurse in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, has died of Ebola, a health official said on Thursday, in the first recorded fatality since the last outbreak ended in 2023. Diana Atwine, permanent secretary of the health ministry, told reporters on Thursday that the 32-year-old male patient was an employee of Mulago Hospital, the main referral facility in Kampala. After developing a fever, the patient was treated at several locations in Uganda before multiple lab tests confirmed he had been suffering from Ebola. The patient died on Wednesday, and Ebola was confirmed following postmortem tests, Atwine said. Health authorities were “in full control of the situation”, she said. (AP)

Boost exports to India, China: Nepal PM Oli

Kathmandu, Jan 30: Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli on Thursday urged businessmen and industrialists to boost exports to international markets, including India and China, by augmenting domestic production. Inaugurating the 8th International Chamber Expo organised by the Nepal Chamber of Commerce at Bhrikutimandap here, Oli said the identification of the most marketable goods and their international trade contributes to increase in exports. Quran burner shot dead in Sweden, five arrested

Stockholm, Jan 30: Salwan Momika, the 38-year-man who held several demonstrations in Sweden and was accused of burning the Quran, has been shot dead in the city of Sodertalje in Stockholm County in east central Sweden, Swedish media reported on Thursday. Momika was allegedly shot dead while he was conducting a live broadcast on social media from his apartment in Hovsjo late on Wednesday, a day before a verdict was scheduled to be announced by the Stockholm District Court in an incitement case against him. “I can confirm that five people have been arrested, suspected of murder,” prosecutor Rasmus Ohman was quoted as saying by Sweden’s leading daily Dagens Nyheter. According to the spokesperson for the Stockholm Police Region, the police received a report of the shooting in Hovsjo at 11:11 pm, local time. (IANS)
