SHILLONG/MAWKYRWAT/JOWAI, Jan 31: The Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections nomination process has picked up pace in the state three days ahead of the deadline with a long list of candidates turning up to submit their papers from different constituencies on Friday.
Veteran MDC Lamphrang Blah from the NPP, who is also the KHADC Chairman, and Leader of Opposition in the Council, Titosstarwell Chyne from UDP, submitted their nomination papers. Blah and Chyne are contesting the elections from Mawphlang-Diengiei and Sohra respectively.
Interestingly, Blah is anticipating a record fifth consecutive term. He reposed his unwavering faith in the Mawphlang-Diengiei voters to allow him to represent them for 25 years in a row. Chyne, on the other hand, recalled the UDP-led Executive Committee’s achievements in the KHADC including the initiative to legislate many important laws including the Land Act of the Council.
Four UDP candidates including sitting MLA Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah and sitting MDC Mitchel Wankhar also filed their nomination. Kurbah is contesting from the Mawphlang-Diengiei constituency, while Wankhar, seeking re-election, is running from Laban-Mawprem. The other UDP candidates include Desmond KL Mawlong from Nongthymmai and former KSU leader Auguster Jyrwa from Jaiaw. Both UDP contestants are confident and hopeful of victory.
UDP, NPP follow suit in SWKH
In South West Khasi Hills, two candidates from Langrin and one from Mawkyrwat filed their nomination for the upcoming KHAC polls, scheduled for February 21. From Langrin, Pius Marwein of the UDP and Mandilost Nongbri of the NPP submitted their papers, while Jeslanroy Nongsiej of the UDP from Mawkyrwat constituency followed suit.
The UDP’s contestants were accompanied by Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar and other party leaders from Mawkyrwat and Ranikor area, while Nongbri was accompanied by NPP state secretary in-charge of South West Khasi Hills, Kitborlang Nongrem, and other block leaders of the party.
The NPP camp in South West Khasi was in a flurry of excitement over the much-anticipated joining of five-time MLA MM Danggo and his supporters, which was not confirmed at the time of filing of this report.
Asked about Danggo’s situation, Nongrem said only the senior politician can make the statement about his arrival in the NPP camp. “Soon everything will become clear on whether he will join the party or not,” he said.
