SHILLONG, Feb 1: Congress candidate from Mawphlang-Diengiei, George C. Sunn, has emphasised the need to strengthen the existing laws of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to align with present-day requirements.
Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination on Saturday, Sunn pointed out that revenue leakages have significantly impacted the council’s financial position.
To address the issue, he suggested that the revenue-generating departments need an overhaul, and even the process of issuing trading licenses should be scrutinised to prevent further losses.
Sunn also stressed the need to empower traditional institutions such as the Dorbar, Hima and Raids.
When asked whether he aims to follow in the footsteps of his father, John Antonius Lyngdoh—who had served as both an MLA and MDC—Sunn recalled an emotional moment during his campaign as many people in the constituency were in tears when he introduced himself as the son of their former MLA.
“It was an emotional moment even for me. My father has never overlooked anyone. I will try to contribute more than what my father did for the good and overall development of the constituency,” he added.
Meanwhile, Congress candidate from Mawsynram, Batskhem Marbaniang, highlighted the party’s role in granting the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which empowered district councils to safeguard the rights, culture and traditions of the Khasi indigenous tribes.
Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination on Saturday, Marbaniang also stressed the need to improve and further strengthen the existing laws passed by the KHADC.
