Shillong, Feb 1: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) is hoping to repeat its 2024 Lok Sabha election performance in the upcoming Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council polls.
After filing his nomination to contest the KHADC election from the Mawsynram constituency, VPP’s Dr. Rusievan Shangpliang told reporters on Saturday that everyone witnessed how people came out to support the party in the last Lok Sabha election in which it had won from the Shillong seat.
He said the VPP is confident of getting a similar kind of support from people in the district council elections.
“We don’t have any magic strategy or hidden agenda. Our priority is to serve the people. People are also aware that the priority of the VPP is to work for their larger interest,” Shangpliang said.
He said the party will try to implement all the points which will figure in the election manifesto.
Shangpliang said he may be a new entrant in politics but he is confident that people will repose their faith in him and give him an opportunity to represent Mawsynram as an MDC.
Stating that he has a teaching background, he said the VPP provided him a platform to take the leadership role to try and solve the problems being faced by the people of Mawsynram. The lack of civic amenities and development are the problems, he said.
“We will need to work hard to give a facelift to the constituency,” Shangpliang said.
To a query, he said the VPP stands for the interest of the people, including non-Khasi voters.
“The party is not biased. We are here to serve people from all communities,” he said.
VPP’s Sohryngkham constituency candidate Bill Clinton Wankhar also filed his nomination for the KHADC polls.
He told reporters he is committed to working for the overall development of the constituency. VPP’s Mawryngkneng MLA Heavingstone Kharpran accompanied the two candidates when they had gone to file their nominations along with hundreds of supporters.
