SHILLONG, Feb 2: This year’s annual pilgrimage to Lum Sohpetbneng, known as the “navel of heaven,” bore a greater significance as faithful believers from across the state, neighbouring regions, and even abroad embarked on the journey to the revered summit on Sunday.
Now in its 26th year since its revival in 2000, the pilgrimage is one of the most significant religious gatherings for the Khasi community.
Seng Khasi Kmie (SKM) vice president DL Nongbri stated that this year’s pilgrimage holds even greater significance as it coincides with the 125th anniversary of SKM’s formation. “The participation this year is not limited to Meghalaya. Many devotees from neighboring states and even from abroad have joined us,” he said. “We are truly happy to see the number of participants growing with each passing year.”
At the heart of the pilgrimage lies the belief that the Khasi people descended from the celestial realm, symbolised by the sacred Lum Sohpetbneng. Rituals and prayers, led by revered elders, culminate in seeking blessings for the faithful at the Altar of the Sacred Lum Sohpetbneng, known as Ka Duwan ka Dupat Sohpetbneng.
Before the pilgrimage, customary ceremonies were performed at Lum Dorbar, Lawnongthroh, and Mei Mawbuh, leading up to the sacred journey to the summit. A week prior, the Lehniam Shi Hat Shi Taiew ritual was conducted, which is believed to offer divine guidance and validate prayers, reinforcing the pilgrimage’s spiritual significance.
Organised by the Seng Khasi Kmie, the pilgrimage is meant to strengthen one’s spiritual essence (Ka Rngiew). The inaugural pilgrimage in 1999 was led by elders and visionary figures who laid the foundation for preserving and expanding the faith through rituals, shaping its future for generations to come.
Upon reaching Lum Sohpetbneng, elders perform rituals to sanctify the Altar, seeking blessings for the community’s well-being and the protection of the land. The belief endures that maintaining a clear and pure heart and soul paves the path to heaven.
