SHILLONG, Feb 5: Aimed to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment while fostering unity in the fight against this global health challenge, a World Cancer Day programme at the Pynursla Community Health Centre (CHC), East Khasi Hills, brought together healthcare professionals, government officials, and community members under the theme ‘United by Unique.’
The event was organised by the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya in collaboration with Pynursla CHC.
Delivering a compelling address, Joint Director of Health Services (MCH & FW), Dr C Iangrai, emphasised on the need for collaboration among healthcare providers, policymakers, and the community to effectively reduce the burden of cancer in the region.
She highlighted the government’s proactive steps in transforming Sub-Health Centres into Health and Wellness Centres, which are now fully equipped with essential medicines and staffed by qualified healthcare professionals, including NCD nurses and health workers, to ensure comprehensive care.
Iangrai also urged the public to prioritise regular health screenings, recommending annual check-ups for blood pressure and blood sugar levels, along with cancer screenings every five years. She stressed that early detection and prevention are crucial for improving health outcomes.
On the other hand, Member Secretary of the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya, Dr. Anisha Mawlong, provided insights into the latest advancements in cancer treatment and emphasised the importance of early detection and lifestyle modifications in preventing the disease.
She also shared alarming statistics, noting that East Khasi Hills ranks second among men and eleventh among women in India for the highest number of cancer cases. She revealed that approximately 200 out of every 100,000 individuals in the district are affected by cancer, with tobacco consumption being a major contributing factor to the high prevalence in Meghalaya.
Junior Rural Development Officer (JRDO) of the Block Office in Pynursla, A Lyngkhoi, underscored the crucial role of local governance in supporting healthcare initiatives. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving cancer care and awareness programs in rural areas, emphasising the significance of World Cancer Day.
The JRDO encouraged citizens to prioritise their health by undergoing early testing and screening. She also informed the public about the benefits of the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) Card, which enhances access to healthcare services.
This initiative aligns with the state’s Meghalaya Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Mission, which focuses on improving early cancer detection and treatment outcomes, particularly in rural areas.
A total of 70 patients were screened for cancer, diabetes, and hypertension during the event.
The program was moderated by Dr M. Shylla, who guided the audience through an engaging and insightful agenda. The event commenced with a warm welcome from the Medical Health Officer of Pynursla CHC, Dr J Khonglah, who emphasised the importance of community involvement in combating cancer.
