BJP to ‘expose’ coal nexus in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Feb 9: The Meghalaya BJP is gearing up to “expose” alleged illegal coal mining and transportation activities in Meghalaya. Party officials have been intensively researching the matter and preparing a detailed report that will soon be submitted to the party headquarters in Delhi for further action.
“We have done our homework and compiled a comprehensive report. The committee will review our findings, and we hope that the party president will take up the issue with the higher level,” BJP vice president Bernard N Marak announced on Sunday.
Referring to the recent findings of Justice (retired) BP Katakey, he added, “If the Justice Katakey committee uncovers any illegality, it will carry legal weight. We have been raising this issue for some time now, but it has not been substantiated until now.”
He criticised the state government for its apparent indifference, remarking, “Every time we raise the issue of illegal coal transportation, the government turns a deaf ear. With our committee in place, we will ensure that these concerns are escalated to the highest level.”
Marak also pointed out the significant revenue losses the state is suffering due to illegal coal mining and transportation. “The cost of these illegal operations is borne by the entire state, and the benefits are siphoned off by a few private individuals,” he said, highlighting the urgent need for accountability.
Commenting on the recently-formed BJP fact-finding committee, Marak noted, “Our committee will be visiting all coal mining districts to investigate the allegations thoroughly. While I cannot divulge further details as I am not a member of the committee, our extensive research underpins our commitment to addressing these illegalities.”
