SHILLONG, Feb 9: The long-awaited Western Bypass project, which is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in Shillong, is progressing as scheduled, giving residents and commuters a glimmer of hope. Work is currently under way in all three packages of the road.
The project, which commenced in September last year, has gained momentum after contractors mobilised their machinery and manpower. According to sources, packages 1 and 3 are making exceptional progress, while package 2 is also on schedule.
Currently, the focus is on earth-cutting work, with efforts to complete the work up to the formation level of the road. This will enable other structural work to continue during the rainy season, as concreting work is typically avoided during Meghalaya’s long monsoons.
The Shillong Western Bypass project involves the construction of a two-lane road with a paved shoulder, starting from NH-06 near Lad Umsaw.
The project is divided into three packages: package I (12.8 km) at a cost of Rs 620 crore, package II (11.9 km) at Rs 686.03 crore, and package III (13 km) at Rs 562.48 crore.
