SHILLONG, Feb 16: Mendipathar MLA and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Marthon Sangma on Sunday claimed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has no future in Meghalaya.
“TMC has no future in Meghalaya and it is evident from grassroots workers leaving the party in large numbers, knowing the party cannot leave any impact in the coming general elections,” Sangma said.
Stating that he has witnessed first-hand the collapse of the Congress due to a power struggle between Mukul Sangma and Vincent Pala, the NPP leader said he knows what a party in decline looks like.
He recalled how the Congress fell apart when a large group of the MLAs defected to the TMC while the others stayed in the fractured party.
He justified his decision to align with the NPP stating that it ensured his constituency received necessary support for infrastructure projects, including road construction and a new college. He described Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma as a dynamic and visionary leader who has been instrumental in pushing Meghalaya’s progress.
Meanwhile, amid speculation if he will return to the Congress, Sangma said he has nothing to do with the party and he will continue in the NPP.
Calling Congress a sinking ship, he said the party could not recover after the defections of the MLAs.
Sangma said when he sits in meetings and sees former Congress stalwarts like Prestone Tynsong, Ampareen Lyngdoh and AT Mondol leading from the front, he sometimes feels if he is still with the Congress despite all being part of the NPP now.
