The Bafta winners for 2024 were announced at a high-profile ceremony in London on Sunday, with Vatican drama Conclave scoring four wins, including for best film and outstanding British film, the same number of honours as Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, which earned the best director and best actor awards for Corbet and Adrien Brody, respectively.
The awards were held at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Doctor Who star David Tennant hosted the gala, which was streamed in India on Lionsgate Play.
Conclave has been adjudged the Oustanding British film at the 78th edition of the BAFTA Awards. This time, Conclave dominated the prestigious gala with 12 nominations including Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Actor, and Casting.
Peter Straughan wrote the script, adapted from the Robert Harris novel. Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Lucian Msamati, Brian F. O’Byrne, Carlos Diehz, Merab Ninidze, Thomas Loibl with Sergio Castellitto and Isabella Rossellini also star.
Producers are Tessa Ross and Juliette Howell, Michael A. Jackman, Robert Harris, Alice Dawson, as per Deadline. Conclave follows Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) who is tasked with running the covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope.
Emilia Perez’ takes home trophy
As expected, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish drama Emilia Perez emerged victorious in Best Non-English Language Film category at the 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).
The film’s director Jacques Audiard accepted the award. Despite controversy over actor Karla Sofia Gascon’s offensive tweets, he gave a shout out to former in his speech, as per Variety.
Audiard thanked Gascon- who was absent at the ceremony and has effectively been removed from the awards campaign.
“Above all, I would like to thank all the wonderful artists who brought this film to life and who are here with us tonight,” he said. “My dear Zoe, my dear Selena, Giorgini, Paul, Juliet, Camille, Clement, Julia and your team, but also you, my dear Karla Sofia, that I kiss.
I’m deeply proud of what we achieved together. Long live Emilia Perez,” he mentioned.
Adrien Brody wins best actor for The Brutalist
It’s a big night for Adrien Brody as he just won the Best Actor award for his captivating performance in The Brutalist at the 78th edition of BAFTA. As soon as Variety shared the update, Brody’s fans chimed in the comment section and congratulated the star over his win.
“Congrats to 1998 Actor to Watch Adrien Brody on his BAFTA best actor win for The Brutalist! It’s been a long road from Ten Benny,” a social media user wrote.
Mikey Madison bags Best Actress trophy
Mikey Madison must be on cloud nine as she scored Best Actress Award at the 78th edition of BAFTA.
Her intriguing performance in Anora impressed the jury and they selected Mikey as Best Actress.
During her acceptance speech, she paid a heartfelt tribute to sex workers. As per Deadline, she said: “I do want to just take a moment to recognise the sex worker community. I just want to say that I see you. You deserve respect and human decency. I will always be a friend and ally.”
She thanked her mom, calling her “my favorite screen partner” for driving her to auditions and helping her run lines. Madison added: “To my fellow nominees, I’m just so in awe of all of you. You just gave beautiful performances. And really, the highlight of all of this has just been getting to know all of you.”
Brady Corbet wins Best Director
Brady Corbet took home award for Best Director for his film The Brutalist at the 78th edition of BAFTA.
In January, Brady even bagged the Best Director Award at Golden Globes 2025.
While accepting the award, writer-director Brady Corbet pushed for more autonomy for filmmakers, as per The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m incredibly moved,” said Corbet, who also won for best film director earlier in Sunday’s ceremony. He then quipped, “I prepared one speech, not two.” As it turned out, Corbet still had plenty on his mind.
