SHILLONG, Feb 19: In the wake of alleged inconsistencies, the state government has cancelled the licence of a Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealer following repeated complaints from residents of Koraibari village in Ranikor about being denied their monthly foodgrains. The Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills has been directed to file an FIR against the accused dealer. This action resolves a long-standing issue in Koraibari village regarding the distribution of Public Distribution System (PDS) rations under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). Residents had consistently raised concerns about being deprived of their entitled foodgrains by the designated FPS dealer, Welwering R Marak.
During a recent visit to the area, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma personally met with locals in Ranikor, assuring them that their grievances would be addressed decisively. “CM Connect has empowered our people. Today, citizens have the courage to stand up for their rights, and we are committed to ensuring that every grievance is heard and resolved,” he stated.
Director of the Supply department, Anita Kharpor, immediately ordered an inquiry, and an investigative team conducted a thorough on-site inspection in the remote village. Their findings confirmed that numerous beneficiaries had been deprived of their rations for an extended period, prompting swift remedial action.
As a result, the FPS dealer’s licence was revoked, and he was instructed to produce all relevant documentation. To reinforce the government’s determination, the Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills has been directed to pursue punitive measures, including filing an FIR against the dealer, should the foodgrains not be promptly distributed.
Commissioner and Secretary of the Food and Civil Supplies department, Pravin Bakshi, emphasised the department’s commitment to transparency in the PDS. “We are ensuring that every eligible beneficiary receives their rightful share, with the introduction of ePOS devices providing automated receipts and regular inspections further strengthening accountability,” he stated.
