SHILLONG, Feb 20: The Education department is currently reviewing teacher recruitment in government schools across the state, with final approval of the roster still pending.
According to Education department Secretary Swapnil Tembe, the recruitment drive follows the pattern established in 2023 and aims to address vacancies across all levels of government and aided schools once the necessary formalities are completed.
“The matter is under examination because we have to adhere to the roster. We have compiled all the vacancies from sub-divisions and districts, and the roster is now under review. Once it is approved, we will proceed with recruitment,” he stated.
Tembe highlighted that a similar process in late 2023 resulted in the hiring of 1,000 teachers. He added that the department is now preparing for the next phase of recruitment, ensuring that vacancies across government and aided schools are addressed. A key focus is the rationalization process, which is crucial for effective staffing. “We are prioritizing this, and once it is completed, all other vacancies will be filled,” he said.
Regarding specific vacancies, Tembe revealed that Government Lower Primary (LP) schools have approximately 500 openings, while the Upper Primary (UP) level has fewer vacancies, estimated at around 10 to 20. Secondary schools are expected to have between 200 and 300 vacancies.
However, he assured that staffing at the secondary level remains stable due to the provision for substitute teachers.
“As of now, teachers are in place at the secondary level, so there is no immediate shortage,” he clarified.
